Creating a community full of opportunity for economically disadvantaged families impacted by unexploded ordnance
PeaceTrees Vietnam’s Friendship Village is located on a 20-acre section of the former Dong Ha Combat Base in Quang Tri Province. Built in 2002, the village includes the Friendship Village Kindergarten, a community hall, sports fields, and 100 homes with running water for economically disadvantaged families who have been impacted by unexploded ordnance (UXO). About 650 people live there today.
In addition to providing a safe place to live with many learning and community opportunities that would not otherwise be available, the Friendship Village provides a physical space where it is possible for war veterans from both sides to reconnect and foster new ties. Through tree-planting and citizen diplomacy trips to the Friendship Village, Vietnamese citizens impacted by UXO gain empowering opportunities and American citizens are able to expand their knowledge of Vietnamese culture and history.
