2018 Anniversary Luncheon Menu and Story

Seafood from Vietnam: A 15-Year Commitment

Shrimp:

For 15 years, Kirkland-based Sea Port Products Corporation, a global seafood importer committed to delivering sustainable seafood to the US market, has worked to supply PeaceTrees Vietnam with the highest quality shrimp produced in Vietnam for its annual fundraising luncheon. The tradition got its start when Sea Port, through the efforts of Jenni Davis, generously donated Black Tiger prawns for a PeaceTrees reception in Seattle honoring Mme. Tôn Nữ Thị Ninh, who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs for Vietnam. Ever since then, Sea Port has worked with its trusted suppliers to donate sustainably produced shrimp grown in Vietnam to PeaceTrees’ yearly luncheon.

The shrimp on today’s menu was harvested from farms in An Minh District, Kien Giang Province. Kien Giang, located in the Southeastern part of Vietnam, is one of the first provinces to shift from growing rice as a primary crop to growing a combination of rice and shrimp. After the shrimp farming season ends, the ponds become more fertile, producing vital nutrients for growing rice. As a result, rice grows well, helping farmers reduce the cost of fertilizer as well as plant protection products. After the rice crop, when the land is re-cultivated for shrimp farming, phytoplankton grows, becoming a nutrient-rich natural food source for shrimp. www.seaport.net

Barramundi:

The barramundi—also known as “Asian Sea Bass”—on the menu today is a product of Vinh Hoan (which means “forever global”), founded 20 years ago in Đồng Tháp province on the Mekong Delta by Mme. Truong Thi Le Khanh, who today serves as the company’s chairwoman. The donation was made possible through the work of longtime PeaceTrees volunteers and sponsors, Jim and Laurie Bugbee.

“In my heart,” Mme. Khanh says, “Vihn Hoan is a vital bridge between local farmers and consumers.” Today, the company works with 300 fish farmers, who participate in the company’s “green farming” initiative. It employs more than 3,000 workers in its processing operations, which have attained seven international certifications and acclaim. In addition to growing barramundi, Vinh Hoan produces premium quality pangasius for discerning global markets. Learn more about the company, its people, and its products: www.vinhoan.com
